A trial of smoking cessation medication
Boston: Scientists Have Tested Drug
Substances From East Asian Traces Under Tuo Months
It can help
up to one-third of smokers quit the habit.
The trial
found that the daily pill cetirizine kept smokers abstinent for five and a half
months.
The
researchers' findings come amid health concerns about e-cigarettes, a popular
smoking cessation strategy. Cytisn cline has been used since the 1980s for
smoking cessation in Eastern European countries. This medicine is made from the
golden rain tree, a flowering plant native to East Asia. This drug affects the
brain's receptor cells that react to nicotine, reducing the need for cigarettes
and helping with withdrawal. In the study, the drug was tested on 810 smokers
who wanted to quit the habit. The results of the trial on these individuals
were compared to a group that was given a placebo and advice.in the study were
given one three-milligram tablet three times a day. One group took the pill for
six weeks while the other group continued for 12 weeks. After six weeks, one in
four people in the drug group quit smoking completely, compared to one in 20 in
the placebo (dummy drug) group.
